Unlike a sailing boat that works on wind power, a power boat is a vessel that operates on mechanical power. Most fishing boats today are power boats and are propelled by a motor that is attached to them. There are various kinds of power boats that are used today and while some are meant for fishing there are other power boats like the racer that are meant for recreational purposes. The main types of power boats that you can find today are: – Dinghy – This is a power boat that uses a2 stroke or 4 stroke motor. It is a small power boat and can carry about 3 people at the most. Mostly made from wood, fibreglass and aluminium, a dinghy is good for use in lakes and may not be the best option for negotiating large expanses of water. – Powered inflatables – Inflatable power boats come in various sizes. The ones that are larger are made of stronger material that can hold a larger number of people. Most of the inflatable power boats do not have any shelter or cabin that can be used for shelter from rain or storm. – Catamarans – These are power boats that are tough and can carry about 10 people or more. Catamarans are fairly stable and generally have two hulls that are connected to the deck. – Cruiser – The cruiser is also a power boat that can be used by a few people to spend the night in. It is large and generally equipped with amenities that may be required for an overnight stay. With a large variety of power boats available, you should consider the purpose for which you want to use the power boat before you decide on the one that you want to purchase.

There will always be challenges whether one decides to fish either in the river or in the open sea. The important thing to remember is to have patience waiting for the fish and doing your best to catch it when it appears.

To be able to fish, a person needs to get a fishing license since this is a requirement by law and the regulations regarding fishing varies from one state to the other.

The first thing one needs for salt water fishing is a boat. It can range from a simple row boat to a yacht. The size of this vessel depends on how many people will join the trip.

For people who will do it in-shore, a 15 foot sailboat that comes with a cuddy forward to serve as a shelter when it rains should do the job. The boat should not be heavy and yet adequately sturdy to not be swayed by the action of strong waves or some bumps on the beach or on the rocks.

One should always try the edges of the perimeter first instead of plopping bait or lure in the middle. This is because it will scare the other fish away. By going through the sides first, one will have a better chance of catching unsuspecting fish in the middle.

If one decides to go “down below” some time, a cod-line is a necessity for everybody to enjoy saltwater fishing. A perch-line will also be good and if it’s time for mackerel fishing, a mackerel jig will be an excellent help.

The right time to start salt water fishing is on the ebb tide. This should be during an early time of the morning to ensure that the trip will be a productive one. This will put the tide in one’s favor and if the wind is light or not fair, this will also help in going home quickly.

The best place to start fishing is going to a fishing ground that is well known to the locals.

Many anglers who are too impatient move from one spot to another which at times make these people miss a hotspot further decreasing the chances of catching fish. It is advisable to cast out a couple of times before moving on using different types of bait. This should be done from the shallowest to the deepest point.

Sharks in the area can disrupt people from catching fish. By pouring some fish blood on a paper towel or newspaper and rolling it into a ball then casting it overboard, sharks will follow the current and leave the area increasing the chances of catching fish.

There are many boats out there on the market, with something for everyone. If you are new to boating, selecting the right boat can be hard. There are boats for every purpose on the water, all you have to do is find the one for you.

To help you in your quest, we’ll go over the several types of boats available. This way, you’ll know the differences when you head out to buy one of your own.

1. Vessel

The vessel is the most common name for a boat, as it’s the description used or capable of being used on the water. Basically, it’s another name used for a boat or anything capable of being on the water.

2. Power boat

A power boat is any boat or vessel that’s propelled by machinery. Fishing boats are great examples, as they are powered by motors or engines.

3. Houseboat

A houseboat is fitted for use as a living vessel or for leisurely cruising. Normally, a houseboat will include living accomodations such as sleeping quarters, kitchen facilities, and even a full bath. The cruising models are normally propelled by power.

4. Sailboat

A sailboat is any boat that’s under sail along with no mechanical means of propulsion. The modern sailboats range from one person boats to luxury yachts that can accomodate several people. They are divided into three basic types:

1. Daysailer – This is a small boat that’s designed for comfortable sailing without sleeping accomodations. It offers a roomy cockpit and can also contain an outboard auxillary engine as well.

2. Cruiser – Cruisers are medium sized or large boats that contain a cabin with sleeping quarters, toilet, food area, and usually an auxillary engine that’s built inside.

3. Racer – Racers are boats built for speed and ease of handling – normally at the expense of comfort.

5. Zodiac

The Zodiac brand of high performance aluminum boats are some of the most popular in the entire boating industry. These boats are constructed with a conventional rigid hull with increased buoyancy and stability. The deep V hulls offered by these boats are made to take any weather. They are well known for their prowess and are used all over the world for commercial search and rescue operations.

6. Catamaran

These boats come with twin hulls. They provide safety, comfort, speed, and stability that’s unmatched by single hulled boats. Popular with boating, they offer you a new twist to hitting the water.

Finding the perfect boat is an undertaking for an experienced boater. For the first time boater, it can be a very difficult task to accomplish. To help you with your quest for the perfect boat, there are a few things you should know.

Deciding what’s important

Choosing the right boat is all about knowing what’s really important to you. You need to decide whether you’ll be using the boat for your own private use, fishing, or cruising. You should also consider your families feelings, as buying a boat for your own personal needs without consulting your family will probably lead to disappointing experiences or less time spent on the water.

Types of boats

Typically, boats will fall into five categories – fishing boats, power boats, sailboats, personal watercraft, and self powered boats. To help you find the perfect boat, we’ll take a look at what each one offers.

Fishing boats

The designs for fishing boats will vary quite a bit, as are the places you can use them. The boats that are meant for shallow waters of inland lakes and rivers aren’t the same boats meant for deep seas and great lakes. There are many different designs, even boats that serve no other purpose besides fishing.

These types of boats normally have stowage and holders for bait, fishing poles, tackle, and even special tanks to hold live fish. Other types of fishing only boats feature an open platform where anglers can fight fish from all sides of the boat.

Power boats

Power boats are the most popular boats sold. The designs with power boats are as varied as their uses. Boats with seating in the front are called bowriders, which are mainly used for towing skiers or rafts. Most boats can also be used for fishing as well. If you want to do both, there are ski and fish combinations available.

Sailboats

When you first learn to pilot a sailboat, it can be very challenging, although very rewarding as well. A sailboat requires more skill and knowledge to operate than boats, although they are considered more rewarding once mastered.

With all available sailboats, the single masted sloop is the most popular design. For those who only boat on occasion, catboats, daysailers, and dinghys are small and easily trailerable.

Help answer the question about fishing boats

How much do fishing boats owners pay per 1 ton of MGO & IFO fuel in the USA?
Those who have big fishing boats in the USA, how much they pay for MGO and IFO fuel? I wonder if the USA government stimulates such high fuel prices, or have any benefits for the fishing companies. I know that governments of Iceland and England provide benefits to fishing companies that spend huge amounts of money to fuel their fishing vessels, otherwise the companies would go out of business. Is there anything like that in the USA?

Fishing has been a part of our survival for as long as recorded history and probably much longer. Ancient cave paintings from 10,000 years ago depict fishing along with fish bone remains and animal bone hooks. Even ancient stone anchors are currently being displayed in museums.

Everywhere on this planet, what ever culture, each has its own history in fishing and techniques, most of which are still used today. In fact, almost all ancient cultures have used boats, hooks, nets and spears of some kind.

The ancient Romans used rods and lines, nets and spears. The ancient Greeks used rods and woven baskets and woven cages that stay under water where caught fish are kept alive until they are needed.

Some cultures have been more creative than others and have very interesting techniques such as the night fishing in Japan. It is called cormorant fishing. It requires 7 to 8 cormorant birds that have handlers to train them. Once trained, they go out at night on a long narrow boat that has a long rod in front of it with a hanging basket that is in flames, the birds are each on a leash and are trained to dive down and catch fish, which they are experts in. This technique is still being practiced today and if you are for any reason going to Japan, you may want to sign up to see this phenomenon.

In the Columbian basin, ancient tribal salmon fishers have past down a fishing technique that is still being practiced today. Tribal families for many generations have built wooden scaffolding that is very strong and stable that spans the river. This enables them to drop the nets that capture many salmon at one time. In the smaller rivers of the basin, dip nets are used because you can control them better. These nets historically have been made with hemp twine, sinew and tree pitch. These nets have a long pole attached to them and one stands in the water and scoops up the fish.

In medieval Europe, V shaped structures were built to herd fish into waiting nets.

Some cultures have used poisonous plants to stun fish so that it is easy to catch them. This is a dangerous practice and has been made illegal to fish this way due to the obvious safety issues. One does not want to risk eating a fish that has been poisoned.

Fishing today is not only for survival but is a huge sport all over the world. But when you really look at it, not much has really changed in how we fish. The major difference really is in the advancements made in hooks and nets.

How ever you fish, may the ones you catch be as big as the ones that got away.

One of the most leisurely activities that anyone can do during his free time is fishing. It proves to be a favorite thing to do across America; not only as a hobby or for pastime’s sake but also as a sport. Technology has also played in the role of advancing fishing techniques and strategies, the modernized tools and equipment have proved helpful for fishing which both the young and old can conveniently use while having a lot of fun. The rules to being a good steward of the earth’s water resources remain classic; some may have been traditional but some could be new through the aid of technology. How can one fulfill his responsibility while having fun under the sun during fishing?

One perennial problem is littering. Some people may have not learned their lesson on putting their trash in the proper place. So, set a good example. Toss your trash inside garbage bins to prevent unwanted litter around the area.

Get information ahead of time before heading to your fishing destination. Call up local agencies that have control over these activities and ask the rules and regulations. Knowing this ahead of time will save enormous time, money and effort. They can inform you regarding the appropriate gears and bait to be used and as well as the type or class of fishes that can be kept. There will be restrictions for equipment that can be or cannot be used such as a watercraft for example. So, if you’re planning to use one, secure the permission first before you even attempt to bring it to the area.

It is important to note that fishing should be done in permissible areas. There are warning signs to look for where particular areas have been announced as “off-limits” from fishing entities and individuals. There are reasons which include your safety and the protection and maintenance of dignity for wildlife. Never step beyond what has been declared as regulations. This is to ensure that no untoward circumstances may happen.

Observe after care procedures that locals may require you to do so to avoid any contamination or infection. There should be safety guidelines that need to be checked and followed. By observing them, you are not only protecting waterways, you also apply the same to protect yourself and your loved ones.

If you need to clean your fishing boat, be mindful of the materials recommended for use and those that may be harmful to the water. Take precautionary measures to avoid oil or fuel spills that may contaminate the water. This is harmful for the fishes.

Fishing has always been a fun-filled activity. Like any other, it comes with the responsibility and the application of what is learned on how to care for different bodies of water namely lakes and rivers. To exercise maturity for the care of these and the diligence implemented to follow the rules and regulations are ways to ensure, lessen or eliminate accidents. Pay it forward. A small good deed for these natural resources is one big thing to preserve them.

Does anyone know of a UK retailer for inflatable pontoon fishing boats?
I've seen a lot of these dual-hulled inflatable pontoon boats used in America for fly fishing and i'm interested in getting one for my father's birthday.

They're also know as catarafts i think or as a variation of float tubes. They have two inflatable bladders with a seat suspended between and a bar to rest your feet on and they make great inflatable fishing boats. I can see plenty for sale in the US but none in the UK.

Are there any businesses out there shipping these to the UK?

In Alaska, salmon come first. Alaska has a long and successful track record of managing and conserving its abundant salmon resources. Record salmon runs with a recent average annual catch of 165 million salmon is the proof of this successful approach.

Nearly 95% of all commercially caught salmon in the US are harvested in Alaska. Alaska is the top producer of wild, high-value salmon, producing nearly 80 percent of the world supply of king, sockeye, and coho. Alaska’s commercial salmon fishery is vital to the Alaskan economy and the Alaskan way of life.

Each year, the salmon industry provides thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars to the state’s economy. Commercial fishing is critical to communities and fishing
families throughout the state.

Alaska’s fishing industry leads the state in providing 47% of private sector jobs, and is second only to the oil industry in providing revenue to the state. In 2002, the exvessel value for combined fisheries totaled $955 million with $162 million from salmon.

Salmon fishing permits are issued to individuals, not corporations, through the “limited entry permit system”. The total number of available permits for each fishery is strictly limited. Fishermen may not own more than one salmon permit for the same gear type and area. This creates a fishery made up of many individuals and families.

Three main gear types catch Alaska salmon: trolling, gillnetting, and purse seining. All commercial salmon fishing boats are relatively small vessels; averaging 30 to 50 feet.

Trollers use long trolling poles to pull or troll 2 to 4 deep weighted lines through the water, each with 8 – 12 leaders attached. At the end of each leader there is a lure or baited hook. Boat size varies from small skiffs to vessels of 50 feet or more with most ranging between 25 to 40 feet.

Trollers primarily target king, coho, and pink salmon as they enter Alaskan waters on their way to the spawning grounds. Trollers catch a relatively low volume of high-quality fish. The fish they catch are bright and vigorous from fresh ocean waters. They are often
sold dressed, or filleted in the fresh or fresh frozen market.

Gillnetters set curtain-like nets in the water suspended from a float line at the surface and a weighted lead line along the submerged bottom edge. Nets vary in length from 900 to 1800 feet long. The net’s mesh openings are just large enough to allow an adult fish head to get through and become entangled at the gills.

There are two types of gillnets; driftnets that are free floating from boats, and setnets that have one end attached to the shoreline. Boat size is limited to 32 feet or less in Bristol Bay; otherwise, the average range is 30 to 40 feet. Gillnetters primarily harvest sockeye, chum and coho.

Purse Seiners use a large floating net, pulled and set in circle by a power skiff, to surround schooling salmon. The weighted “purse line” at bottom of the net is drawn closed to contain the fish. The net full of fish is then gathered to the boat through a highpowered hydraulic block.

Purse seiners are not allowed north of the Alaska Peninsula; boat size is limited to 58 feet. Purse Seiners harvest mainly pink salmon near the shoreline and close to fresh water spawning grounds where runs are highly concentrated.

Bass fishing usually requires a fishing pole, but there are other ways, and that is what this story is about. A warning though: The techniques described here are almost certainly illegal wherever you go fishing. They were fun when we were kids though…

Bass Fishing From A Raft

Wilsey Bay in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is known for its good smallmouth bass fishing. The swimming isn’t that bad either, which was why we built the raft. My friend Bruce was probably the oldest at the time, about twelve-years-old. It was probably his idea to use the oil barrels for flotation. Four of them, topped by some wooden pallets and plywood nailed together, made a raft that could support seven or eight people.

We anchored it in the middle of the bay. It is a shallow bay, so the middle was still only six feet deep or so. This would be our swimming area, but more than that. We started to bring small trees out and sink them with milk jugs full of sand and pieces of cinder blocks. Of course, we didn’t know that it was illegal to build an artificial environment for fish. In fact, we didn’t know that this was what we were doing. We built walls of rocks underwater as well.

Within a few weeks there were schools of fish hanging out below our raft in the racks and tree branches. There were some perch, but most of them were smallmouth bass. As we watched then swimming below us, and then as we watched them next to us during our dives. I had an idea. Who needs a fishing pole when you can get this close to the fish?

Bruce kept the bucket ready in the boat, which was tied to the raft. I had one fishhook and three feet of line. I tied the hook to one end of the line and tied the other end to my finger. I treaded water while Bruce baited the hook with half of a worm. He threw the line over the edge of the boat.

Swimming by the trees, I simply let the baited hook float alongside me, trying to hold it out from my body a couple feet. I could only hold my breath for a minute or less, but by the second dive a ten-inch bass darted out of the tree branches and took the bait. I swam to the boat and lifted it up for Bruce to take. Just barely legal – or at least it would have been if it weren’t for the trees. Then again, maybe a fishing pole is a legal requirement. Bruce threw it in the bucket and I went back down for more.

Perch Fishing By Hand

The little creek that enters the bay was occasionally stopped by the sand that built up during storms. Then the water would build up behind the sand for days until it broke loose and opened up the stream again. We didn’t always wait, however. Once there was sufficient water pressure, a simple channel dug through the sand by hand, from the dammed creek to the bay, was enough to get it going. It would start out slowly, and then, within an hour the creek would be gushing out into the bay, twenty-feet across where our three-inch channel had been.

Since the creek rarely flowed this fast normally, other things happened that weren’t normal. The fish that had been in the creek behind the dam would all get flushed out, for example. The day of the “perch flush” the creek had opened up almost thirty-feet wide, but only a few inches deep. As the perch came out, we grabbed them by hand until we had a couple dozen in a bucket. We built a pond on the beach for these, since it was too many to eat all at once.

Other Childish Fishing Techniques

We caught smelt one at a time by hand with a flashlight, as many as forty in a hour or two. We shamelessly clubbed suckers in the creek ad brought them to the neighbor. She would pressure-cook them with ketchup, and they came out looking and tasting almost like canned salmon. Half for herself – that was the charge for cooking them for us.

Whether bass fishing without a pole or clubbing suckers, these are probably not techniques you’ll want to try unless you want to meet the local game warden. And I do have to warn you that the last time I tried using just a hook and a piece of line, the fish bit my thumb and drew blood. Yes, I may be the only person to ever had blood drawn by the bite of a smallmouth bass. But it is fun to remember how much fun childhood fishing could be.

As bass fishing is becoming more and more popular these days, other people who have witnessed how the game is played also wants to engage themselves in such kind of game playing activities. But it is very costly and it is such a luxury for an employee with minimum wage. You are required to purchase different kinds of fishing gears, purchase or rent a fishing boat, and much worse, if you are looking for a different kind of bass fishing adventure, let us say hunting a peacock bass fish, you need to travel to South America just to fulfil your adventure.
Fortunately, web developers have designed online games especially for those people who cannot afford real-life bass fishing. The online bass fishing games are also for sport fishers who have already engaged in such activities but do not have enough time because of their work or simply because they need to spend their vacation days or weekends with their families.
If you would like to play online bass fishing games, search the Internet to access some of the available bass fishing software in the World Wide Web. In the Online Bass Fishing Log, the Internet user have an opportunity to join their bass fishing community database, where they can interact with other Internet users and possibly compete with them online.
What makes this site interesting is that it has a directory where you can be informed on the possible bass fishing venues and how to get there. It also has information about the state where you want go bass fishing and the lake or river where you can play. They also have virtual seasons and its effect on the water temperature and humidity, wherein you will know what is the most favourable season to catch more fish. There are also choices on the lures most fitted for catching the fish.
Virtual simply means that the month, days, season, and other related conditions are only programmed and it is only a fantasy. Let us say for instance, in the Rocky River in the state of North Carolina, the water temperature is about thirty-two degrees, and the clarity of water is estimated to be about 12 inches deep. When you are planning to bass fish online on the middle of January, the expected weather is clear and windy, and the air temperature is about 58 degrees Fahrenheit. In this condition, large bass of about 116 pounds are expected to slowly divulge itself from its habitat. These online sites are open to everybody who wants a complete guide in bass fishing game.
Next popular software for online bass fishing fanatics is the Tournament Tracker. This fishing club software is designed for your club’s data. Though this program is not only designed for bass fishing games, but it is useful to keep your fishing data.
The program allows you to trail you club’s roster and your other member’s information, tournament schedules, and its results. Even the summaries of all the past tournaments you have created through Tournament Tracker can still be viewed. Other features includes completely designed interface, user-defined scoring options, and species list of prey for all and selected type of clubs and its members.
VMT Software lets you purchase fishing gears to use for your online bass fishing. Other features include your total expenses in playing the bass fish game and your manager’s records of your fishing and hunting trips not only inside the United States but also in other countries as well.
You have now the latest and popular software and online games in the Internet. These will not just be for fun it can also be a tool in developing your skills in bass fishing even if it is only online.
Happy Bass Fishing Game Playing!!

The day trippers going up and down California Highway 1 often miss the fun of a side trip to Moss Landing Harbor. It’s a good stretch, a quick walk on the beach and maybe some seafood if you aren’t paranoid about the mercury or whatever else may be inside those ocean critters.

Actually Moss Landing is no longer just a speed zone by the big power plant and the Little Baja trinket shop. The town is still surrounded by strawberry and artichoke fields but it is changing. In a couple of hours one can see almost all of Moss Landing and then be on your way.

But these days if you strike up a conversation with a local the odds are it will be with an oceanographer and not a commercial fisherman.

With Watsonville and Santa Cruz to the north and Salinas and Monterrey to the south, one would be hard pressed to find a better coastal California location than Moss Landing. It is also hard to believe that the same water that slowly winds out of the Elkhorn Slough eventually mixes in the Monterey Canyon a mile deep just off the coast from Moss Landing. And it’s hard to believe that most of Moss Landing is just a sand bar.

Ever wonder what happens to a sand bar in an earthquake? In the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake Moss Landing found out. Seawater began to filter up through the sand as if the sand bar itself were coming apart. What would happen in the really Big One?

But earthquakes didn’t kill the fishing industry. Moss Landing is a rusting relic of a once powerful industry; there aren’t as many fishing boats in the harbor anymore. Say it ain’t so Joe but with all the science and technology that goes into the Monterey Bay, none yet has been able to figure out how to quickly save the fish.

As a consequence the shortened seasons and restricted fishing areas have all but eliminated the fishing industry. How many thousand tons of fish a year did Cannery Row once produce?

Just as the fishing jobs went the way of Davy Jones locker, research and more research has rapidly taken its place. What was once quaint and salted fish talk now is eco-tech speak, whatever that is. Rusty pick ups have been replaced by Audis and Volvos with eco bumper stickers. Salty fishermen have been replaced by oceanographers.

It used to be fun to walk around to the fishing and boating related stores and businesses although like the fish many are gone now too. The employees of Long Marine Lab or the Monterey Bay Marine Labs at Cal State don’t buy bait, ice or tackle.

In fact, they might eat but they probably bring their own bean sprouts and tofu burritos. No deep fried fish and chips and Coronitas for this bunch…besides; they know too well what’s in that fish as well as the grease it’s fried in…

Seen as a tourist pit stop, Moss Landing ten years ago got in on the tail end of the antiques boom which brought a string of antiques stores to downtown Moss landing. Some are still limping along today. Business is down but the rents are better than Monterey or Carmel. The yearly Moss Landing Antiques Fair helps but weekdays are especially slow in the antiques and collectibles trade. Sort of like the fishing boats…pretty quiet.

Phil’s Fish Market and Eatery is still cooking though like anything it has lost something as it got bigger. In the old days everything on the menu was good. Now it’s hit or miss, even with old favorites like the seafood platter.

Somehow Phil couldn’t scale from six tables to 50 and keep his quality. The fish just isn’t as fresh but quality always proportionately diminishes with growth, no? Still, Phil’s is one of the few restaurants left standing.

Clearly the biggest landmark and eyesore is the Moss Landing Power Plant, a couple of monster smokestacks designed to generate 560 Megawatts of electricity built right on the Elkhorn Slough Estuary.

There has been a fledgling movement by eco extremes to replace the eyesore with another power source; but unfortunately no one has been able to figure out just what that power source would be. The plant emits about one million tons of carbon dioxide annually and puts about a billion gallons of heated water into the cold Pacific Ocean daily.

Solar and wind power won’t cut it here, though the winds on the Moss Landing section of the Monterey Bay are steady and strong. The fact is no one on the Central Coast is willing to give up electricity just yet. Fish maybe, but not electricity.

Let’s just hope the really Big One doesn’t come anytime soon our dear Moss Landing will still stay on the California map.

Help answer the question about fishing boats

What are some good safe ocean fishing boats?
I am looking for a reasonably price fishing boat to take out from bouy 10 (columbia river) and 5 – 20 miles off the oregon coast. It doesn't have to be fancy, just be safe in the ocean. I heard Arima is a good brand, what are some others…
For the guy who said "There are safe people. You do not sound like one of them"
I've been boating the columbia for 15 years in many different Bayliners. I've never had any accidents. I once had the weather quickly change on me with 5' – 6' rollers comming at me but safely made it to shore. I just wanted some suggestions for ocean worthy boats.
