The question is often asked…Is it easy to fish for bass? You could ask this question to a hundred fisherman and half would respond yes and the other half no. Bass fishing technique will determine whether you are successful or not. Bass can be such an intelligent fish that you have to stay one step ahead of the game to be in the race.

Bass fishing technique incorporates several areas and no one technique is more important than the other. More so a combination of things with the one obvious aim of snaring a fish. Let’s look firstly at the casting and luring technique.

The Cast And Retrieval

The cast is fairly straight forward. Casting a reasonable distance is the preferred option. The retrieval of the line is where you should be paying particular attention. You need to tantalize the fish into striking your bait and one way of doing this is simply retrieving the line in short sharp bursts rather than just bringing it back in a straightforward, boring motion. An insect travelling across the water would hop and skip in a stop start fashion and bass find this hard to resist. To them it’s food and if your bait is imitating the exact same movement, your chances of inviting the fish to grab your bait increase significantly.

Practice And Technique

Bass fishing technique involves a lot of prepatory work. It may seem a little complicated to the novice and that’s expected but once they get the “bass fishing bug” into their system they become hooked for want of a better word. Here are a few things to consider: – Know your area. If you a travelling to foreign waters get some understanding of the peculiarities of the area. – Your gear should be maintained and up to scratch. For example, are your hooks sharp? – If using worms, Texas rigged worms are preferred. Suspend the bait rather than submerging it. It’s usually recommended that the bait be suspended for between 80-90% of the time. – Except when jigging the bait in the retrieval motion, try and keep it as still and straight as possible. I’ve said the bass are a smart fish; they know what’s natural and what’s not, believe me! – Many experienced fisherman will tell you to try and avoid clear waters and stick to the murky areas. If your technique is up to scratch, then clear shouldn’t really be a problem. Again, avoid the temptation to just drag the bait along the water. It’s lazy and the fish aren’t stupid. – Fishing at night will get you excellent results with bass. They are adept at seeing in the dark.

Spring is generally regarded as the favored time for fishing bass. However, in recent years, many anglers are starting to discover the joys of winter fishing. Obviously, you’ll need a little extra clothing during the winter but for prey like the smallmouth bass, your chances are increased sharply.

Bass fishing technique will differ slightly from angler to angler but the basic principles usually apply. Just remember not to get too hung up on applying the techniques correctly first time. Just enjoy the fishing!

It is not enough to know how bass behave and what they eat and to have all the right equipment when you are bass fishing. One of the fishing techniques you need to develop is knowledge of the water. The top layer of water is the first layer that becomes accessible in spring. When fishing bass in this season you have to use the proper lures, such as top floating lures that have darting and splashing action that will attract the fish.

The middle section of water separates the top from the bottom and acts as the barrier between the temperatures in both sections of water. Bass usually spend most of their time in this area as the transitional area of temperature and it is here you will find some of the best bass fishing. The lure you use here will be different from that of the top, with the best being action and rattle baits and medium diving plugs.

Even though the bottom area of the water has the coldest temperature, this cold water does sometimes rotate to the top and vice versa. Therefore, at certain times of the year, you will be able to fish for bass in deeper waters. They also drop down to this layer when they are in their inactive period or when something frightens them. The best lures to use in deep water are worm and flipping jigs and crankbaits for deep water.

You don’t have to be out in the middle of a lake in a boat to be able to fish for bass. You can use the same techniques when fishing for smallmouth bass from shore. This is because they are found only about the length of your cast from the shoreline. However, you have to look at the shoreline. If you decide to cast off from a clear area, it is very unlikely you will be successful. The best areas along the shore to choose for fishing bass are those where there are lots of weeds and other vegetation. Bass sometimes hide in these areas.

Early morning and evenings are the best times of the day to fish for bass from the shore. This is because the low light gives the bass more confidence, which in reality makes it more vulnerable to anglers.

Learning to watch the weather is another technique that experienced bass anglers have mastered. You will rarely see any of them casting out their lines on the day after a cold front has passed through. This is because the instincts of the bass alert it to changes in the weather, such as colder weather and they will feed frenzily until they are full. Then they become inactive for a day. The following day they start feeding again, which would be the best time to have a day of fishing. However, just because they are inactive won’t mean they won’t bite at the lure. They just won’t expend the energy needed to chase it down.

You do have to know the type of bass that inhabits the river or lake where you are fishing. This knowledge will assist you in choosing the proper lure for that fish.

Saltwater fishing usually includes fishing for sharks. The shark is a fascinating creature that gets lots of attention from anglers.

There are different species of shark that are sought after by anglers for both the sport of fishing and for food. They do taste great and they can put up an amazing fight making their popularity grow. In some locations you can fish for sharks from the beach area so even anglers without boats can join in on the fun and adventure of shark fishing.

This is an exciting species of fish that can be very alluring yet evasive. It takes time and lots of patience to go shark fishing. It is unlike any other type of fishing and requires skill to catch and reel in this unusual fish species.

You need some unique shark fishing techniques to help you get the most out of shark fishing and the information below should help you out.

Where and When to Go Shark Fishing

To get started shark fishing you need to know where and when to go. When deciding where to go shark fishing there are two things that you need to look for. One is the water temperature and the other is structures. Sharks are located in different parts of the ocean depending on what species you are searching for and the time of year you go.

Normally, they are offshore creatures that swim deep in the oceans but they do move inland to find warmer waters when they are ready to mate with other sharks, lay eggs or give live birth. The best advice is to learn as much about the species of fish you intend to go after as possible. This will give you a great advantage.

Most any structure will make a great home for sharks. They will hover around dips in the sea floor, around rocks, small islands and so forth. Get a map of the area where you are fishing and learn where the structures are before you go out. The best time to start shark fishing is in March all the way through September in most locations.

This is the time of year that the water temperature warms up enough to where they start coming closer inshore. However, right in the middle of the summer when it is the hottest they will move offshore into the cooler waters then back inland as the shallows begin to cool back down to a more moderate temperature.

Bait, Tackle and Techniques for Shark Fishing

You don’t need a lot of fancy equipment, tackle or bait to go shark fishing. Your main concern should be quality gear that will withstand the elements and the struggle the sharks will put up.

When you go shark fishing you will need to have heavy tackle because the sharks are strong and will put up a struggle. Circle hooks are recommended for the best results and it doesn’t hurt to carry a variety of rods and reels with you on each trip.

In bass fishing you will find that there are various bass fishing techniques which can be employed to make certain that you have a chance of having a good time. These techniques will be ones like the types of fishing knots which will give you a good still on the rod bait or lure.

You will also find that some of these bass fishing techniques are ones that anglers use in order to get a really great catch. If you are a novice you will be told what these bass fishing techniques are in brief, but the secrets to this art will remain with your mentor. You should not worry too much as there are many different fishing books of all sorts which will provide you with a healthy amount of bass fishing techniques.

Once you have found the books, magazines and internet sites which will provide you with the bass fishing techniques that you need, it is up to you to start getting proficient at these. The best way to practice these bass fishing techniques is to start at home. You will need to see how the hand movements are done and try these steps yourself.

You should understand that while these movements will seem effortless when the experts are bass fishing it will take you some time. The various bass fishing techniques can then be used with slight modifications for the black or white bass. You should practice making your casts quietly as the noise of a large splash will scare the fish away.

Once you have become proficient at bass fishing techniques you can travel to a known bass fishing spot. Make sure that you have other plans for dinner planned. Also make sure that the area you are practicing your bass fishing techniques in is deserted. Other anglers – unless they are family – will not appreciate having their fishing of bass disturbed by your novice bass fishing techniques.

You should not worry too much as the bass fishing techniques that you have picked up will improve as time passes. The main thing to remember is that you should start out with small and easy to use fishing techniques. In some cases these are the ones that you will remember long after you have become proficient.

The many different bass fishing techniques which you will find are the ones that can improve your fishing capabilities. Using these bass fishing techniques will allow you to master the intricacies of bass fishing much easier and quicker.

One of the best bass fishing techniques would have to be splitshotting. This can make all the difference between a successful days fishing or sitting twiddling your thumbs all day.

Without doubt you should take the time to practice this bass fishing technique and not only will it make your a better bass fisher but it will give you more enjoyment when your out fishing during the cold winter months.

If you desire to master bass fishing then this is a technique that you must learn.

If you do decide to put the effort in you will learn very quickly how to master the art of the fall and winter bass fishing. By taking the time to learn techniques you will be rewarded with exceptional smallmouth bass.

A fact that you must remember is that it takes a smallmouth bass about eight to ten years to gain a weight in excess of five lbs. To make sure you preserve the smallmouth bass you should always practice responsible catch and released techniques.

The cold weather will always put bass fish into their winter patterns. You will need to forget all about spinner baits, rips baits and crank baits. The time will have come to break out all the finesse gear. And as mentioned earlier, one of the most successful bass fishing techniques to get the bass to bite during the colder months is splitshotting.

It is quite a simple technique to master and will not require you to invest much in termainal tackle.

One of the hardest things to teach an angle in learning the splitshot bass fishing technique is being able to teach them how to detect the bite. The bite will always vary depending on the activity level of the fish.

Sometimes the bass fish will pop the bait hard and it will be easy to tell when they bite but then on other occasions there will quick tick and then nothing after that.

And last but not least there is the pressure bite which is dreaded by many fishermen.

The pressure generally takes 2 forms

The first way to describe a pressure bite is you will feel a slight resistance to pulling your line forward. This is somewhat like hooking a soft, spongy rubber band. The second pressure bite is when you lose contact with the bottom.

A bass has picked up your lure and is just following along with your forward movement. This is why it is so important to maintain bottom contact. Once you realize that you’ve lost the feel of the weight against the bottom, and your depth hasn’t changed significantly, you have to put two and two together and get ready to set the hook.

The preferred hook set for this technique is called a sweep set. Once you have detected a fish holding your bait drop the rod tip towards the fish, reel down to the point of feeling resistance (or just shy of that point) and ‘sweep’ the rod horizontally away from the fish.

If the rod loads up good and you’re sure that you’ve got the hook in the fish just fight him to the boat. If you set the hook and it didn’t feel solid you may want to set the hook a second time. The drag on your reel should be set tight enough that it doesn’t give on the initial hook set. But it shouldn’t be set so tight that a larger fish can’t take the line if needed.

When fishing for bass the best spots will never be in weeds or cover, this is why you should always use weed less lures whenever possible. This will help to save you money as you will not lose as many lures.

Bass fish do exist in a variety of different temperatures but the do tend to be less frequent on the cold front. Fish will always tend to swim deeper during the sunniest time of day. Sun does seems to effect bass fishing in a negative way. Try to seek out the more shady spots or areas with deeper water and cover.

Then if you are fishing on a overcast day you should try and find shallower water. When in cold waters you should reel in your bait much slower and fish generally tend to react much slower in colder temperatures.

Another popular technique that is used by many angles is the freshwater fish identification. This is handy knowledge to know if you ever find yourself watching bass fishing pro or listening to commentary during a fishing program you will know they are speaking the truth.

To become a great angler you will need to learn many bass fishing techniques. Remember to practice each one often and you will find yourself getting better and better.

You will be selecting your walleye fishing reels based on what your walleye fishing technique. Anglers who regularly use several fishing techniques during a day of fishing often include in their walleye fishing tackle, three or four combo rod & reel outfits, each set up different with lures or live bait setups.

The following recommendations will help you chose the correct walleye fishing reel to go with your selected walleye fishing rod.

For good sensitivity and casting performance , your reel must balance with your rod. Make sure you match your walleye fishing lure, walleye fishing jig, and walleye fishing live bait weights with the correct line recommendation walleye fishing reel, and walleye fishing rod combination when setting up your walleye fishing rigs. For example, if you attempt to use a reel intended for 12 – to- 20 pound line with a rod designed for 4 to 8 pound test the outfit will be butt-heavy.If to much weight is present on the butt of the rod, casting becomes extremely difficult, and your wrist snap (which propels your lures and bait rigs when casting)will be severely limited. Also being over weight in the butt of your walleye fishing rod will dull the rods sensation when getting a bite. You need to have a great deal of sensation in your rod if you want to catch anything. One of the most important part of your walleye fishing tackle should be a matching rod and reel combinations for all your different walleye fishing techniques.

When selecting a Spinning reel, look for the following features:

#1 A rear Mounted drag.

#2 Make sure the reel has a skirted spool of adequate size to hold at least 100yards of line.

#3 A bail with strong spring tension. If the bail does not close all the way, the line will ride on the bail itself rather than on the roller. When you attempt to set the hook, the bail will open up enough to line come off of the spool. Some of the best spinning reels have a spring on each side of the bail.

#4 A free-turning bail roller. The roller must must turn when the line passes over, If it does not, heat and abrasion will damage the line and may wear a grove in the roller.

#5 Interchangeable spools. These spools snap into the reel, enabling you to quickly change to a different weight of line or type of line, or to replace a half empty spool with afull one.

If you are looking to add more options to your walleye fishing tackle, make sure when you pick a walleye fishing baiting casting reel you take a very close look at the backlash mechanism. The Backlash resistance is the most important feature of a bait casting reel. Bait casting reels are sometimes used as a walleye fishing reel for some fishing techniques, for example when trolling for walleye. The backlash mechanism should be made of a magnetic or centrifugal brake system to make sure you have a good backlash resistance. A high gear ratio is not a requirement for walleye fishing because fast retrieves are seldom needed. A gear ratio of 4:1 is usually adequate. Some bait bait casting reels also come with interchangeable spools.

Although most experienced walleye fisherman frown on spin casting gear, it remains a favorite among many anglers. If you purchase a spin casting reel make sure it has a smooth drag and a reliable line pickup mechanism. Unless the line is taut, the mechanism on a cheap spin cast reel often fails to pick up the line when you turn the handle.

Although you can watch others when they are bass fishing and read about various techniques, you really have to try out the techniques for yourself so that you can put your own individual spin on them and make them your own. The bass fishing techniques that work for your fishing buddy may not work for you, even though all the techniques share some similarities. What you need to do is try out the various techniques to find the ones that work best for you and then use them to your advantage. For this reason, it is necessary for you to have an overview of the techniques used by the majority of bass fishers.

First, start thinking like a bass. Research this fish to find out what kind of food it likes to eat and what part of the lake it is most likely to be found. Knowledge of seasonal patterns are of extreme importance. For example, shad is one of the best lures you can use when fishing bass, but it is best used in summer when the shad spend their time at the bottom and a re therefore not very plentiful in the water.

Learn about the feeding habits of the bass and then look for pockets of baitfish in the water. This will likely be where you will find the bass and you won’t waste your efforts fishing in other locations on the lake. Use the electronics in your boat to find where the fish are. Even if you are just practicing throwing out the line and happen to get a bite or even catch a fish, take note of the location on the depth finder. Take note of where your lures are to see if they are in the right area. If not, you can make the necessary adjustments.

When the fish are really biting, many anglers get caught up in the moment and forget to retie or decide to wait just a little longer. The next fish could be the big one you have been waiting for and when it catches hold, it will snap your line. As you become more accustomed to the lures and which one works for you in different situations, you will also learn how to make modifications to them. You can do such things as modify a lure to run left or right or something as simple as changing the blades on a spinnerbait.

Practice is the key to successful bass fishing, just as it is with everything else. Plastic baits work best in some water, while wooden baits are better in others. There are few anglers that are experts in the use of both. Even if you prefer using one kind, you should practice using the other so that you can use it when the situation demands. It is important to know your strengths, but it is equally important to work on your weaknesses.

Techniques for successful bass fishing also include being able to recognize patterns in the water. If you see a shad flipping in the water, this could be a sign that there are bass nearby. The same thing applies to noticing ripples in the water that could denote the existence of bass chasing bait.

Split-shotting has been around the fishing scene in one form or another since the inception of putting a worm on a hook. But, it wasn’t really popularized until the early 80′s as a viable means for presenting a plastic worm. The technique was formally developed by a Southern California angler by the name of Dick Trask. He developed the technique in order compete in local team events on the heavily pressured lakes of So. Cal. His method worked so well that it enabled him to be “the” major threat on the water at all times. He won or placed in almost every event he fished until his secret technique came to light. Since then, the Split-Shotting Technique has become a mainstay on the tournament circuits in the West and a few other states.

Fishing the split-shot rig is very simple. It can be fished in water as shallow as 1′ to water as deep as 90′. All you do is cast the rig out, let it sink to the bottom, and slowly drag it back to the boat. When working the bait back, some people like to use the reel to work the bait. Others prefer to drag it with the rod. In any event, the best way to hold the rod while working the bait is to hold it at a 90 degree angle to the line. This will give you better sensitivity during the retrieve.

Another way to work the bait occurs during very windy days. In most worm fishing techniques, it is difficult to feel your bait during windy conditions. But, the split shot rig can be easy if you use the wind to your advantage. All you need to do is cast your bait into the wind, let it sink to the bottom, and work the rig by allowing the wind to slowly move the boat. You do not need to reel. By using your trolling motor, you can control the speed of your drift and thus, the speed of your lure.

Although the rig was initially developed for use on heavily pressured lakes with small (3-4″ baits) finesse plastics, any size bait can be used. In California, the common baits are generally 3-5″ long. But, many people are using 6″ and longer baits too. Some may ask, why not use a Carolina Rig for the bigger baits? Well, that is an option but for the subtlest presentation, the split shot rig works the best. It has a minimum of hardware associated with it and you can use a very light split-shot for extremely shallow water fishing.

Freshwater Fish Identification is another technique used by anglers. Detecting the bite is the hardest lesson for a bass angler who is learning to split shot. The bite varies with the activity levels of the fish. At times, they will pop the bait very hard, making you aware instantly that the fish is eating the bait. At other times, there will only be a soft and nearly imperceptible tick and thereafter nothing.

Finally there is the much dreaded pressure bite, which takes two different forms. The first form of pressure bite is where you feel a little bit of resistance to pulling the line forward. It feels like hooking a spongy and soft rubber band. The other type of pressure bite is where contact with the bottom is lost. When a bass fish has picked up the lure and is merely following along with any of your forward movement. It is the reason as to why the maintaining of bottom contact is so important.

A sweep set is the preferred hook set to be used with this technique. Once you detect a fish holding the bait, drop the tip of the rod towards the bass, reel down till the point where you feel resistance or just short of it and horizontally sweep the rod away from the bass fish.

If you have ever spent time fishing for tuna, you know how much fun it can be. These magnificent fish are truly wonders to behold. Unfortunately, attracting and catching these beautiful game fish can sometimes be a challenge. Before you spend hundreds of dollars trolling around the ocean, consider these tuna fishing techniques that will have you catching more tuna and having more fun.

1. Control Your Speed – When fishing for tuna, troll at speeds of 5 to 8 miles per hour. Most professionals like to use a typical ‘W Pattern’ while trolling. This pattern consists of 2 long lines held out on each outrigger, 2 shorter lines held out flat and one deep line straight down the middle. Additionally, it is helpful to display a flashy presentation of multiple lures. The more they splash, sparkle and shine the better. What you want is to trick the tuna into thinking that it has stumbled across a panicked school of bait fish.

2. Pay Attention to Nature – Anytime that you see diving birds, pay special attention. Diving birds typically means that there are schools of bait fish nearby. Where there are bait fish, tuna tend to also be some place close. Additionally, large schools of tuna like to travel near pods of dolphins or sharks.

3. Pay Attention to the Season – During the warmer summer months, tuna love to hunt near the surface of the water. Feeding tuna are easy to spot on clear summer afternoons as the water looks like it is being destroyed from beneath. Additionally, tuna like to feed in low light conditions, such as the late afternoon. During the winter months, tuna tend to hunt in deeper waters and are much more difficult to find and catch.

These are but a few of my favorite tuna fishing techniques.
